The St Andrew’s Dance Department is fully committed to engaging students in the Performing Arts genre of Dance through both curricular and extra–curricular events. Class time is jam-packed with our dedicated teachers delivering highly creative and practical lessons. Students are able to enjoy this experience in the comfort of our fully equipped studio type rooms. Entering the Dance room immediately immerses one into a world of professionalism, where experimentation in learning is both encouraged and celebrated. The rooms are fitted with barres, mirrors and timber sprung floors, ensuring student’s involved in Dance classes are experiencing their lessons in a safe and aesthetic space.
Every year our College is host to visiting dance troupes such as The Australian Ballet and Dance North. Students from Years 6 - Year 12 are given the chance to see high quality live theatre without having to leave the grounds of the College. Additionally, excursions regularly take place whereby companies such as Sydney Dance Company and Bangarra Dance are made accessible to our students via a theatre visit. The students themselves are given plenty of chance to perform through involvement in The Cairns Eisteddfod, The Cairns Show and school based plays and musicals.
In the Junior Years (Prep - Year 5): Students will follow the Australian Curriculum syllabus documents for English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, The Arts, HPE and Languages. In 2016 we will be implementing Version 8 Australian Curriculum for Learning Areas. This rollout will be completed in 2017. The tenth Learning Area is Religion, where we follow the Brisbane Guidelines. Curriculum content and achievement standards are made explicit within the Australian Curriculum. Junior Years staff are responsible for the selection of the most suitable pedagogical approach for the students within their care. This ensures the best possible teaching and learning opportunities can take place at all times
In the Middle Years (Years 6 – 9): Students complete compulsory units of Dance in Years 6 and 7 studying Dance through the ages and Storytelling via Dance. In years 8 and 9 students are able to choose from electives covering topics ranging from Musical Theatre and Modern Dance to Dance for Screen.
